Evaluation of the dietary reference values for vitamin D

The benefit of vitamin D has been heavily debated over the past few years. There are claims that vitamin D not only fulfills a protective function for bone health, but also for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The question is to what extent such claims are scientifically proven? And do people at risk of deficiency need to use vitamin D supplements in order to be on the safe side or not? The Health Coucil of the Netherlands evaluated the dietary reference values for vitamin D and accompanying recommendations on supplementation.
