Louise Gunning-Schepers, President of the Health Council of the Netherlands

On 1 April 2010 Prof. Louise Gunning-Schepers was appointed by the government as the new President of the Health Council of the Netherlands. She began her presidency on 1 September 2010.
Louise Gunning-Schepers studied at the University of Groningen and at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health at Baltimore in the USA. She obtained her PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam. She also was a policy official at the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports. In 1991 she was appointed Professor of Social Medicine at the Amsterdam Medical Centre (AMC). From 1995 to 1997 she was a member of the Scientific Council for Government Policy. Since 1997 Louise has been a member of the Board of Directors of the AMC and Vice Dean. Since 2001 she has been Chair of the Board of Directors of the AMC and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Amsterdam. From 1 September 2010, simultaneously with her presidency of the Health Council, Louise has been appointed as Professor of Health and Society at the University of Amsterdam.
Since 1997 Louise Gunning-Schepers has been a member of the Health Council, and has worked on a number of Council committees. She combines scientific excellence in the field of public health with extensive administrative experience. These qualities are a great asset to the Health Council, enabling it to face the future with confidence.
