Flu pandemic still a possibility

Area of activity
Although the pandemic of influenza A/H1N1 2009 (also known as New Influenza A or Swine Flu) was not as bad as feared, a more severe pandemic still is a possibility. Influenza viruses of animals can cross over to people, who have no immunity to such viruses. Governments can prepare for a flu pandemic, but uncertainties will remain. When scientific knowledge is insufficient, risk assessment and precautionary measures will have to be relied upon. Vaccination has a role to play in limiting the consequences of a flu pandemic. It is not necessary, however, to enter into contracts with manufacturers, at this stage, for the supply of vaccine in the event of a pandemic.
